First Queens of Hope Pageant Held
by Ashley Lewis
On March 19, the Relay for Life group, Queens for Life, hosted their first Queen of Hope Pageant. Olivia Buzzard, daughter of Jennifer Buzzard, created this event to raise money for Relay for Life. Olivia wanted to do a Relay for Life team with her fellow queens from the area. Olivia was the Junior Miss Holly Days in Vienna and is the 2016 Preteen Miss Ohio Valley United Personality.
Olivia had the idea to do a pageant to raise money for her team. She chose the name of the pageant, group and also the crowns. The pageant had seven categories to be crowned: Baby Miss, Toddler Miss, Little Miss, Junior Miss, Preteen Miss, Teen Miss and Miss. There were three additional categories: Community Service, People’s Choice and Outfit of Choice. They also had certificates for Best Hair, Best Eyes, Best Smile, and Best Personality for each age division.
The Community Service category was for the person who brought in the most donations for Relay for Life.
“I had done a Relay for Life team before with my family in memory of my grandfather, Gary Jones, who passed away from Leukemia. It is a cause that means so much to us,” Jennifer said.
The event took place at the Vienna community building across from Jackson Middle School. The event raised over $300 for Relay for Life.
Jennifer stated, “We are small right now, as this is our first pageant, but we hope to make it an annual event to raise money for Relay for Life and to do other things as well to help raise money all year long.”
The winners are:
Baby Miss: Ava Grimes
Little Miss: Brystol Lesher
Junior Miss: Madison Nicholson
Preteen Miss: Layla Starkey
Teen Miss: Athena Root
Miss: Taylor Rhodes
People’s Choice: Brystol Lesher
Community Service: Haley Hughes
Outfit of Choice: Taylor Rhodes
The winners were asked to represent their titles and join Queens for Life at the Relay for Life in May.
