2020 could be the biggest year for video games. Here are the top 10 anticipated video games of this year and beyond according to fans of game developers.
10. Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is a post-apocalyptic, open-world game by CD Projekt Red, which made The Witcher franchise. The game is based off the popular tabletop game of the same name. The game will supposedly pit the players into a variety of choices to make throughout the story. The most hyped thing people are going crazy over is that Keanu Reeves is playing a major role in the game. To be honest, the game seems boring and the only reason it’s getting hype is because Keanu Reeves is in it. The game is expected to release on September 17th for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia.
9. Half-Life: Alyx
Half-Life: Alyx is a first-person shooter game made by the critically acclaimed studio, Valve. The game is the first game of the series to be released in over a decade. Instead of the player being the main hero, Gordon Freeman, the player is Alyx Vance. The game has the same mechanics as its predecessor. The anticipation from Valve fans is exhilarating, although they wanted a direct sequel to Half-Life 2. As a major fan of Valve, I am glad that the studio is returning to its beloved franchise, but it’s disappointing to fans of Half-Life because many of them was anticipating in the highly wanted sequel to Half-Life 2. It requires the player to have a virtual reality capable PC to play. Half-Life: Alyx is expected to release on March 23 for Virtual Reality compatible PCs.
8. Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated
Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is 3-D Platformer based on the beloved Nickelodeon show. It is an entire remastering of the hit 2003 game. It will include all the original voice actors from the show, such as Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown and Roger Bumpass. The story of the game is about Spongebob, Patrick and Sandy retaking Bikini Bottom from the robots created by the evil Plankton. The remastered version will also have features that were not in the 2003 version, such as the robotic Squidward boss fight and a multiplayer mode. I personally loved the 2003 version of it when I was a kid and I can’t wait for the reboot. This game has no official release date, but it is speculated to release by late 2020. It will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
7. Watch Dogs: Legion
Watch Dogs: Legion is an upcoming open-world video game set in the Watch Dogs universe. This game is one of the first to introduce a new game mechanic, playing as NPCs. Players can become anyone in the world whether it may be a street thug, or an elderly woman. The only downside is that once the NPC you are playing as is dead, it’s dead for good. Watch Dogs: Legion is the third installment of the acclaimed franchise. The game centers around hacking into machinery and electronics. It takes place in a futuristic version of London, England. I am hyped for this game because it introduces new game mechanics, unlike its predecessors. This game has no official release date and is speculated to be playable on the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X and Google Stadia.
6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game made by Nintendo. It takes place on an island where the player can customize it to become the ultimate vacation spot. It features beloved characters from the franchise like Tom Nook. This game has many fans excited and waiting frantically to purchase it. I, however, am not a huge fan of the game because it never had me interested. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on March 20th for the Nintendo Switch.
5. Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite is a game made by 343 Industries. It is the highly anticipated game that Halo fans are waiting patiently for. The story will focus on the main protagonist, Master Chief. The studio hopes to revive the series after the original studio that made Halo, Bungie, dropped out of producing it. It is speculated to surpass the Xbox Series X’s graphics potential. I am hyped for this game because it seemed incredibly strong in the supposed plot, even though I never played any of the Halo games for myself. The game has no official release date and it will be playable on the Xbox One, PC and Xbox Series X.
4. Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 3 is a remake of the original game by Capcom. After the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake from last year, the developers were happy to announce the sequel to the remake. The game will focus on the protagonist, Jill Valentine. The game will have many jump scares and thrills around every corner. It will also feature Resident Evil: Resistance, a multiplayer mode where one player plays the monster while the others are human survivors. Even though many fans of Resident Evil are looking forward to its release, I personally don’t like survival horror games as much. The game is expected to release on April 3rd for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
3. Marvel’s Avengers
Marvel’s Avengers is an action-adventure game by Square Einx and Crystal Dynamics. It takes place in San Francisco where it is under attack. The Avengers must do everything they can to save the city. The game will feature many of the beloved superheroes, such as the Hulk and Iron Man. Each hero has their own unique set of abilities, such as flight and super jump. I am extremely hyped for this game because I am a huge fan of Marvel. The gameplay seemed flawless. It is set to release on September 4th for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Google Stadia.
2. DOOM: Eternal
DOOM: Eternal is a first-person shooter made by id Software and published by Bethesda Game Studios. It is the direct sequel to the 2016 hit video game. The game will pit you as the Doom Slayer who tries to stop a Hell invasion on Earth. The game will feature new demons and weapons so players can slash their way to victory. It will also feature a multiplayer mode where one player can become a demon and invade another player’s game. I personally loved the 2016 reboot. I am highly anticipating to play the sequel and try out its new mechanics introduced through gameplay. DOOM: Eternal is set to be released on March 20th for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Bethesda confirmed that the game will be available for the Nintendo Switch on a later date after the release.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is an upcoming open world game by Nintendo. From what fans gathered from the teaser, it features Link and Princess Zelda exploring a cave and witnessing the resurrection of Ganondorf. Breath of the Wild was one of the best Nintendo games I have played in years. The graphics on the Nintendo Switch port was phenomenal. I hope that the graphics will be further optimized for the console so that it won’t be heavy on the battery of the Switch. There is no further information about the game, and it is currently in production phase. It will release for the Nintendo Switch, but it has no official release date.
These games will most definitely be worth while in the future for all the gamers in the world. 2020 will be the best year for video games according to fans. The ones beyond 2020 are going to be worth the wait.
